I have always loved fairy tales and ever since I first read it, Peter Pan has been my favourite. During my whole childhood I used to daydream about "Neverland", that faraway and exotic island where the most wonderful adventures took place.

I would never have expected to find anything so spectacular in the real world as this island created in my imagination, until I discovered: The Rock Restaurant.

On one of Zanzibar's most spectacular beaches, Pingwe, you'll find this quirky restaurant perched on a rock and reachable on foot or by boat, depending on the tide level.

Opened in July 2010, The Rock Restaurant has become through the years one of the essential stops when visiting the country. Initially a rather basic structure, it was a fisherman's stall, but has now become a fabulous restaurant managed by a local company of residents in the village of Michamvi.

Simply decorated in typical island style, the place has few covers and a lounge area on the outdoor terrace where you can enjoy an aperitif with one of the best views of the Indian Ocean or a cocktail under the starry sky of the African nights.

The gastronomic offer is a mix of Italian cuisine and local dishes, probably the best fish offer in Tasmania. In most cases the fish is caught directly from the waters around the restaurant, the vegetables are grown in nearby fields and the pasta is home made.
